Grant’s Hunting Birthday Cake

Last year we provided the wedding cake for Ashley and Grant’s wedding.  We love repeat clients so we were more than thrilled when Ashley contacted us to create a surprise birthday cake for Grant’s 30th birthday at the Lung Fung Chinese restaurant.  Grant is an avid hunter, having traveled to the mainland and even Australia on hunting trips.  Ashley sent us photos of the taxidermied animals they have hanging on the walls of their home and we replicated two of each animal – mallards, rams and deer – all handmade, out of sugar.  As the cake was hexagon shaped, we were able to include a different animal on each panel.  For the topper we created a figurine of Grant with his favorite hunting dog, and included his other two dogs as the base of the cake.  The rest of the cake was made to look like the wilderness, with all-edible grass, dirt and rocks.  For his flavor, Ashely choose our Chocolate Cake with Cookies and Cream Filling.

Happy Birthday Grant – hope your birthday was fabulous!

Chase’s 1st Birthday 3-D Baby Dinosaur Cake

In planning for Chase’s 1st Birthday at the St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse, his mom Karly contacted us about making a cute 3-D baby dinosaur cake for him, as well as an assortment of cupcakes.  She shared with us a picture of his birthday invitation, but allowed us creative freedom when designing the cake.

We went with bright colors, and everything from the cake and all its accents, to the little figurines on each cupcake were all edible – made completely of sugar.  The cake flavor they chose was Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Filling, and the cupcake flavors included: Orange Dreamcicle Cake with Vanilla Cream Filling, Devil’s Food Cake with Cookies N Cream Filling, Yellow Butter Cake with Lilikoi Filling, Yellow Butter Cake with Fresh Strawberry Filling and Guava Cake with Fresh Strawberry Filling.

Chases’s mom Karly shared this funny story (and photo) with us via Instagram:

“I forgot to mention that when I was serving the cake, my nephew asked if he could eat the eyes, but we ignored him. When we were packing the cake up we noticed that BOTH eyes were gone. Apparently my nephew and his classmate ate it :-/ They did say it was delicious!!!”

PS everyone… follow us on Instagram @acakelife =)

Congratulations Chase – we hope your 1st birthday was fabulous!

Canuck Themed Wedding Cake

Heywood and Ka Wai from Vancouver, Canada chose Roy’s at Ko Olina to hold the reception for the destination wedding.  They LOVE hockey and are big fans of the Vancouver Canucks and requested that we design their wedding cake around this theme, also pulling in some Hawaiian-looking accents.  To tie in their hometown spirit, we used the team’s colors – royal blue and green, added striping that mimicked the team’s jerseys, added yellow and white sugar plumeria flowers in between the tiers, and the couple provided the look-alike bobble head cake toppers.  For their flavors they chose our Yellow Butter Cake with Lilikoi Filling and White Buttercream Frosting.

Other Canadian touches included player figurines that served as centerpieces on the guest tables, and my favorite – a LIFE-SIZE figure of UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre that pointed guests upstairs to the reception area! Haha, I loved their originality!!!

Congratulations Heywood and Ka Wai – we wish you a lifetime of happiness, and thank you for choosing A Cake Life for your special day!

Realistic Bass Fish Groom’s Cake

Photos courtesy of Kristin Kato

Linda and Frank were married at Kualoa Ranch, and in addition to their traditional wedding cake, Linda requested a special surprise groom’s cake for her fiancée.  She shared with us that Frank is really into bass fishing and wanted us to make a bass fish cake for him.  She emphasized over and over again “to make it as realistic as possible” so we created an entirely edible fish cake – even down to the fondant cutting board, worms and hooks, etc.  The cake was shaped out of red velvet cake and cream cheese frosting.  We spent about 10 hours on the cake, making sure each detail was just right – the textured scales, the gradient colors, even the silvery highlights on the fish.  As we were setting the cake up, people were just blown away by it.  Linda shared with us that her mother couldn’t believe it was a CAKE, so she kept poking at it!!

Photos courtesy of Chef Elmer of Poke Stop after Linda and Frank cut their cake!  Frank requested the head of the fish to be set aside just for him!

Here’s what Frank had to say about his cake…

“I have never been more shocked/happy/speechless in my life.  It was unreal that Linda was able to pull this off without me having any suspicion, but on top of that…you and your team did an AMAZING job.  My friends and I all grew up bass fishing here in California and we were even thinking about trying to sneak in a little Peacock Bass Fishing over at Lake Wilson while we were out for the wedding.

As a side note…at the end of the night, the entire cake was cut up…My dad was going to take the fish head home for his sisters family who didn’t get any wedding/bass cake.  Linda saw it and for one reason or another, she took a big ole bite out of the face of the BASS.  It was one of the highlights of the night!

Of course, my friends at the wedding loved it, but since we’ve posted it on FB and Instagram, tons of people have asked us about it.  “Dude, that fish looks real”, or “how the heck did she do that?”

Thanks again, I don’t know what else to say other than…you guys are awesome!”

We had a great time designing this cake – thanks Linda and Frank for the opportunity to create this amazing cake for you!
