We began discussing Robin and Chris’ cake design early-on in their wedding planning and they requested a 3-tier, white to light ivory ombre textured buttercream cake with a gorgeous floral cascading down the front of the cake. The floral decor for their wedding was perfect for the springtime season!

They chose a different flavor combination for each tier: Guava Cake wih Fresh Strawberry Cream Filling, Lemon Cake with Lemon Cream Filling and Yellow Butter Cake with Lilikoi Cream Filling.

The flowers we used for their cake design included white mums and hydrangeas, soft pink garden roses and bright fuschia wax flowers.

I absolutely love the flower centerpieces they chose!  And the photo lounge and props look like so much fun!

Character Cake Toppers

Awhile back we posted about the different animal cake toppers we’ve done – today we want to share with you some of the different character cake toppers we’ve designed for different events – mostly children’s birthday parties.  The fun part about these is the “research”, which means we DVR a few episodes, and kick back to learn more about the show and the characters.

From there we sit down with gum paste fondant and work on shaping the characters, and getting the painting and detail just right.  The process can take hours, but there’s nothing better than seeing a client who absolutely LOVES their cake!

Some of our favorite, or most requested designs (not in any particular order) include:

Hello Kitty – you can view the entire cake/cupcakes HERE and HERE.

Angry Birds – you can view the entire cake – HERE.

Pororo – you can view the entire cake – HERE.

Sesame Street – you can view the entire cake – HERE.

Ninjago – you can view the entire cake – HERE.

Alice in Wonderland

Ox, the Ugly Doll

Got a favorite character of your own?  Contact us as we’d love to provide a character cake for you!

SBA Award – Young Entrepreneur of the Year

SBA Award Pic

Back in February I was honored to receive the Small Business Award “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” Award for the City and County of Honolulu, at the 26th Annual 2013 SBA Awards Luncheon recognizing top businesses, lenders, entrepreneurs and advocates in Hawaii’s largest small business awards program.

It was an AMAZING honor and I am SUPER grateful for this recognition.  I am also grateful to all our wonderful clients for trusting in us with their cake orders, the tremendous support from my boyfriend Grant, his family, my sister, my team and all the other great vendors I get to work with.  At the end of the day, I am grateful to have a job that I absolutely LOVE and am EXCITED about every single day.

The award luncheon took place at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and culminated several months of work on the application process.  For the past few years we’ve been working on gaining financial backing for a growth project, and it’s been a very eye-opening process with many set backs at times.  Just as we began to move forth with Bank of Hawaii, my business banker shared that he wanted to nominate me and my company for this award.  We worked together closely filling out the application form, and finding all the necessary information – it was quite the process!  Finally, after the committee met I got a surprise phone call saying that I had won the “Young Entrepreneur Award” – needless to say, I was speechless!  =)

  3. Increase in sales and/or unit volume
  4. Current and past financial performance
  5. Innovativeness of product or service offered
  6. Response to adversity
  7. Contributions to community-oriented projects
  8. If applicable, a description of the products exported and markets served

Here is an excerpt from an article published by Pacific Business News about our company and the SBA Award:

So far, the biggest obstacle for A Cake Life has been finding a balance between growth and expansion.  As a small-business owner, in the beginning, I handled everything myself so it’s taken time for me to learn balance, delegate responsibilities and ask for help when needed.  Now that I have a great team behind me (which is what we focused on in 2012), we’re ready for the next step in our expansion.  Finding financial backing was a huge challenge, and an intense learning experience.  That’s where I’ve found the importance of setting goals and growth, and constantly evaluating where we are in our business plan – we’ve faced lots of rejection, but I think it’s made us stronger.  We are so grateful for Bank of Hawaii’s faith in our business – they were actually the ones who nominated us for the Small Business Award!

While there is no monetary award, it is a very prestigious honor.  Many thanks go to Bank of Hawaii, who nominated us for this award and worked closely with us throughout the whole process.  We’re sooo excited to be partnering with Bank of Hawaii on our next venture.  To be continued…soon!

Great Gatsby-Inspired Shoot on Style Me Pretty

Have you seen the movie The Great Gatsby (released last month)?  Awesome movie, and an even better book – one of the “great American classics”!  The 1920’s seem like such a fun era.  So when Karine from Seasons of Life Events and Evonne from U Me Us Studios contacted us about creating a Great Gatsby-Inspired photo shoot we were super excited!

We created a 3-tier fondant cake to embody the 1920’s flair!  We included a simple white Art Deco style pattern across the pale gold fondant and the middle tier was emphasized with a band of sugar gold sequins. I LOVE SEQUINS!  The gold sequin band was made to mimic the fun headband pieces the women of this era so stylishly rocked!  And the band was completed with a gold 1920’s geometrical style centerpiece.

Style Me Pretty Destinations has featured our shoot on their blog: Great Gatsby Inspired Photo Shoot from  U Me Us Studios + Seasons of Life Events.

A Painter’s Dream: Painting-Inspired Vignettes at The Wedding Café

Photos courtesy of Kricia Morris Photography and Fisheye Studio

We just wrapped an awesome project – a window and table display over at The Wedding Café, and are so excited to share it with you.  We teamed up with Les Saisons and Emi Ink to put together 4 different vignettes (including a matching cake and hand-painted canvas by Kristin for each), all-inspired by PAINT!  We used an assortment of drop cloths, easels, ladders, stools, old doors and shutters, paint cans, watercolors, acrylics, brushes and jars to create a painter’s studio. The display will be up till May 23 so be sure to stop by the Café and check it out.  If you do visit our display, be sure to take a photo and tag us on Instagram at #acakelife.

Watercolor Wonder

Our first vignette is watercolor-inspired.  The cake was an extra-tall single tier cake with a pink and orange hand-painted watercolor design, with a matching, off-set pink sugar flower topper.  Kristin hand-painted the watercolor matching floral canvas for the display.

Love Birds

The second vignette was a modern inspired design, focusing on brush stroke and texture.  The cake was a 2-tier tier white fondant cake with a relaxed, gold, light-brush stroke along the top of each tier, that created lots of texture with paintbrush bristles.  We created a topper of two lovebirds in a nest, surrounded by yellow and white flowers and foliage, with more flowers and foliage at the base of the bottom tier.  The matching canvas was of a contemporary-looking gold tree, with a pair of red lovebirds.  This display was reminiscent of The Wedding Café’s sister store, Eden in Love as their logo includes a pair of lovebirds.

Whimsical Swirls

Our third vignette was inspired by a fun print – not necessarily wedding related, but something cute and playful.  The cake was a 2-tier light pink/ivory fondant cake with an extra-tall base tier with a hand-painted loopy gold pattern and a half-height top tier, adorned with two simple matching sugar flowers – perfect for a first birthday party or baby shower.  The painting was that of a red heart pattern.

Elegant Embossing

The last vignette was inspired by a wedding dress with lots of texture, swirls and pleats.   The cake was a single tier white fondant cake, with an embossed, scalloped, textured gold edging, along the top of the cake – the design was actually pressed into the cake! Around the base of the cake we included lots of 3-dimensional ruffles, creating a swirly, whimsical texture. My assistant Stacie created the acrylic bird painting to match with this vignette.
